Just Moved? Rekey vs. Replacing Your Locks, Explained

A cluster of house keys on a dark surface, ready to be rekeyed

Here's a question for anyone who's bought a house: how many copies of your front door key exist right now? The previous owners made some. So did their kids, their cleaner, the dog sitter, the contractor from the kitchen remodel, and the neighbor who watered plants in 2019. Nobody collected those keys at closing. They're all still out there, and every one of them opens your door tonight.

That's why the first call after a move should be a locksmith, and it's usually a smaller job than people expect. The question we answer most is whether to rekey the locks or replace them. After 15 years of doing both all over Hot Springs, here's the plain-English difference.

What Rekeying Actually Is

Rekeying keeps your existing locks and changes their insides. A locksmith adjusts the pins inside each cylinder so the old keys stop working and a brand-new key operates the lock. Your hardware stays on the door, your finish stays matched, and every key that existed before that visit becomes a souvenir.

Rekeying is faster and cheaper than replacement, and for a house with decent locks, it delivers the thing you actually want: total control over who can get in. This is the right answer for most people who just moved into a home around Hot Springs, and it's what we'd do at our own houses.

The bonus almost nobody knows: while we're in there, we can key every exterior door to a single key. Front door, back door, garage side door, shop, one key runs them all. Once people have it, they never go back to the keychain full of mystery keys.

When Replacement Is the Right Call

Rekeying can't fix a bad lock. Replacement makes sense when:

The hardware is worn out. Keys that stick, knobs that wiggle, deadbolts you have to jiggle and lean on. Rekeying a dying lock gives you a fresh key in a failing mechanism.

The locks are builder-grade bargain hardware. Some locks are simply weak, light metal, wobbly cylinders, no drill resistance. A new-key version of a weak lock is still a weak lock.

There's damage. After a break-in or attempted one, the lock and often the strike and door frame need real repair, not new pins. If someone kicked at your door, the frame matters as much as the lock, and we look at both.

You want an upgrade anyway. Moving is the natural moment to step up to a quality deadbolt, or go keyless. If you're curious what holds up in our climate, we wrote a full guide to smart locks in Arkansas.

The Situations People Forget

Moving isn't the only rekey moment. A roommate leaves and keeps the key. A relationship ends badly. A cleaning service changes hands. A purse with keys and an ID showing your address gets stolen, and that one's urgent, treat it like an emergency. Landlords and cabin owners around the lakes should rekey between tenants, and short-term rental owners have an even better option in a keypad lock with rotating codes.

Renters, ask your landlord before changing anything, but do ask. You have no idea how many keys the last five tenants made either.

What About Those DIY Rekey Kits?

They exist, they're brand-specific, and they work fine if all your locks happen to be that brand, you're comfortable taking cylinders apart, and nothing surprises you inside. Most houses have a mix of brands and a few locks with worn or mismatched parts, which is where kit projects stall on a Saturday afternoon. A mobile locksmith rekeys the whole house in one visit, every brand, keyed alike, tested. We're not against DIY, we just meet a lot of its graduates.
