Locked Out of Your House? What to Try First (and What to Skip)

A set of keys hanging in a residential front-door lock

House lockouts have a schedule. They happen when it's raining, when the groceries are melting on the porch, or at 11 p.m. when the door swung shut behind you and the deadbolt did its one job. We've been answering these calls around Hot Springs for over 15 years, and before you do anything drastic, run through this list. A surprising number of lockouts end without anyone getting paid.

Check Everything First

Every door. Back door, garage entry, the door to the deck. People guard the front door and forget the others daily.

The garage. If your car is out and has a garage remote clipped to the visor, and the door into the house from the garage is unlocked, you're already in.

Windows, carefully and honestly. A ground-floor window you can reach without climbing is worth checking. A ladder to the second floor at night is how a lockout becomes an ER visit, and we say that as people who'd rather lose the service call.

Family and spare-holders. The spouse at work, the kid at practice, the neighbor who's had a spare since 2020. One call can beat every other option.

Smart lock backup. If you have a keypad or smart lock on any door, remember the app works from anywhere, and most keypads have codes you may have given a relative.

What to Skip

The credit card trick. It only works on angled latch bolts with no deadbolt, mostly in movies, and it destroys the card and often the weatherstripping. Your deadbolt doesn't care about your Visa.

Picking it yourself with a bobby pin. Also mostly movies. What actually happens is broken pins and hairpin fragments inside the cylinder, which turns a simple opening into a lock replacement.

Breaking a window. The math never works. Glass, board-up, replacement, and now a window that announces to everyone how easy your house is to enter. A professional opening is a fraction of the cost, and nothing needs repairing afterward.

Kicking the door. The door usually survives. The frame doesn't, and frame and jamb repair costs more than almost any other option on this page. We see the aftermath a few times a year, always with the same sheepish story.

What a Locksmith Actually Does

A residential lockout is core work for us. In most cases we pick the lock open nondestructively, in minutes, and your lock and key work exactly as before. No drilling on a standard lock that's simply locked. If anyone reaches for a drill as their opening move on an ordinary deadbolt, that's a red flag we cover in our locksmith scam guide.

Be ready to show you belong there. A legitimate locksmith will ask for ID or reasonable proof it's your home before opening it, and you want it that way. The same rule that slows you down for five minutes is the rule that keeps us from opening your door for someone else.

After You're Back Inside

The lockout you just had is trying to tell you something, so let it:

Hide-a-key, but smarter. Skip the fake rock by the porch light, burglars shop the same stores. A combination lockbox mounted somewhere discreet holds a spare that can't be found by flipping doormats.

Keypad or smart lock on one door. The real cure. No key to forget, codes for the kids, and around the lakes, no more hiding keys for weekend guests. We install and service them daily, and our smart lock guide covers what holds up here.

Rekey if the lost key is really lost. If your key didn't stay home but vanished out in the world, especially with anything showing your address, a rekey closes that loop the same day.
